Telephone lifeline for diabetics

August 24, 2007

Australian and American scientists are testing an automated phone system to help diabetics.

The team from Monash, Queensland, Queensland 51国产视频 of Technology and Boston universities will examine the system, which uses voice-recognition software to find the right prerecorded answers to patients' questions. Answers are stored in a database to help tailor responses in future calls.

Before going through to the system, callers upload their latest blood glucose readings to data transmitter connected to a dedicated mobile phone. The system provides advice based on blood sugar levels.

The researchers said the system was not a substitute for a doctor but would help patients with day-to-day management of their condition.
