Australian and American scientists are testing an automated phone system to help diabetics.

The team from Monash, Queensland, Queensland 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Technology and Boston universities will examine the system, which uses voice-recognition software to find the right prerecorded answers to patients' questions. Answers are stored in a database to help tailor responses in future calls.

Before going through to the system, callers upload their latest blood glucose readings to data transmitter connected to a dedicated mobile phone. The system provides advice based on blood sugar levels.

The researchers said the system was not a substitute for a doctor but would help patients with day-to-day management of their condition.
