About the role

The School of Education, Communication and Society (ECS) at King’s College London invites applications for a ten-month Postdoctoral Research Fellowship within the Global Observatory on Academic Freedom project (GOAF).

GOAF is a research endeavour launched in 2020 focusing on the study of contemporary understandings and practices of academic freedom across various jurisdictions, higher education systems and institutions. A key aspiration of GOAF is to produce research that supports the development of conceptual reference points and practical guidelines for academic freedom that are better adapted to the present times and challenges in this area. For this, GOAF engages with academic communities and other relevant stakeholders to both reimagine the concept and strengthen effective practices of academic freedom that transcend yet have utility in diverse academic, regulatory and social-political contexts.

This is a full time post and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 8 months from the day you start.

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:?

We are looking for a Senior Research Assistant/ Research Fellow with a background in Health Services Research, with experience in advanced quantitative methodologies. Some experience in qualitative methods is also desired. In our study we are investigating whether it is possible to predict how many nurses are needed on hospital wards from routinely collected data. You will have an interest in healthcare workforce research, with an enthusiasm for researching nurse staffing decisions that maintain quality and safety of patient care. ?Your work will involve a variety of tasks including both individual and team working. The project offers opportunities to apply skills in qualitative data analysis of survey data, complex regression modelling and predictive data analytics. ??

The role?

You will join an interdisciplinary research group whose work has contributed to health workforce policy and guidance in the UK and worldwide. You will work on a 2.5-year study funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research. This collaborative study involves co-Investigators from the 51国产视频 of Southampton, two NHS hospital Trusts, Imperial College London and NHS England.?

Working closely with co-Investigators, you will contribute to analysis tasks across the project. You will also be expected to contribute to tasks such as project management, data acquisition, database creation, workshop planning and preparation of publications, according to your previous experience and seniority.?

The post is funded until October 2027 with a fixed-term contract initially, but we will work with you to identify opportunities for ongoing funding. The post is available full-time, but part-time or job-share will be considered. Flexible working requests will be considered but this role is not suited to working wholly remotely.?

About you??

You will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience. Candidates who are working towards a PhD will be considered for appointment as a Senior Research Assistant. Experience in undertaking research in health services or settings, including data collection and analysis, is essential. You should also be willing to learn more advanced analytical techniques and display a demonstrable interest in health workforce research. ?

	Strong communication, engagement and influencing skills, particularly at a senior level.
	Experience building partnerships and securing funding to deliver measurable outcomes.
	A degree in a sustainability-related field (e.g., Environmental Science, Energy Management).


Ideally, you also bring experience in higher education and hold a relevant professional qualification such as Chartered Environmentalist or similar.

Your personal sphere of influence The research group?“Atmospheric Transport Processes”, led by Prof. Andreas Stohl, is part of the?Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. The group develops the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART and studies all aspects of transport in the atmosphere, ranging from greenhouse gases to pollutants, water vapour and heat, and uses inverse modelling techniques to determine sources of greenhouse gases, air pollutants and radionuclides.

We seek a highly motivated candidate to pursue his/her doctoral thesis within the research fields covered by our research group. These could be, for instance, theoretical and numerical improvements of FLEXPART, development of new application fields for the model, or applications of the model in existing application fields such as transport of heat and/or water in the atmosphere during extreme meteorological events; climatological analyses of air/heat/water transport using an existing Lagrangian re-analysis; development of a new Lagrangian re-analysis based on the forthcoming ERA6 reanalysis; inverse modelling of greenhouse gases, radionuclides or air pollutants in the atmosphere. We will select the best qualified candidate and will define the exact topic of the doctoral thesis together with him/her.

The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to?4 years?if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration. The position is available from?June 2025, but a later starting time can be negotiated.?The review of applications will begin on 25 May 2025 but the search will continue until the decision is made.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research and teaching, which means you will:


	Contribute to the further development of the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART;
	Use?FLEXPART, you will conduct research in the topical field of the doctoral thesis;
	Teach within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement;
	Publish your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals;
	Strengthen the collaborative culture of our team and the Department;
	Become an active member of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS / doctoral school).


You will require:


	Completed master or diploma in the atmospheric sciences (e.g., meteorology, climatology), or a related field;
	Programming and data analysis experience;
	A good team spirit and willingness to collaborate;
	Strong English communication skills.


These skills would be an advantage:


	Experience with Lagrangian transport models;
	Expert knowledge of programming, preferably in Python and/or Fortran.
