A public university, the 51¹ú²úÊÓÆµ of Zimbabwe is located in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. It was first established in 1952 when it was known as the 51¹ú²úÊÓÆµ College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and was initially affiliated with the 51¹ú²úÊÓÆµ of London. It was later called 51¹ú²úÊÓÆµ of Rhodesia, before becoming the 51¹ú²úÊÓÆµ of Zimbabwe following Zimbabwe's independence in 1980.

The university has 11 faculties including agriculture, arts, commerce, education, engineering, law, science, social studies, veterinary sciences and the college of health sciences. Each offers a range of different degree programmes along with various specialist research institutes.

The main campus is found in the Mount Pleasant suburb in northern Harare. The campus comprises 740 acres, though a third of it is seasonal wetland which remains undeveloped. This area of the city is reserved for education and nearby is the Ministry of Education Audio-Visual Centre, Mount Pleasant School, and the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council headquarters.

There are 171 buildings on the main campus, including academic halls, student accommodation and staff housing. There are also plenty of sporting facilities including the college green which is also used for social events. Students can choose from athletics, basketball, cricket, football, field hockey, rugby, and tennis and teams from the university frequently wins the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association Games.
