Now, funded by EPSRC, we are looking for a talented?Postdoctoral Research Fellow?to join the?RADAR-SIGN-BRIDGE?project – an exciting initiative to develop?privacy-preserving radar technology?for?British Sign Language (BSL) recognition and translation.

You will be based in the?School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS), working alongside an interdisciplinary team led by?Dr. Shelly Vishwakarma (s.vishwakarma@soton.ac.uk), in collaboration with partners at the?51国产视频 of Edinburgh (Centre for Speech Technology Research, CSTR)?and?51国产视频 College London (Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre, DCAL).

About the role

You will lead the design, development, and validation of?LinguaRadar?– a first-of-its-kind radar simulator for sign language gestures. Your work will involve integrating animation pipelines (e.g., OpenPose, MediaPipe, Blender) with radar signal models, generating synthetic radar datasets, and validating them with real-world measurements from?radar hardware.

As part of the team, you will:


	Build and validate radar signal simulation frameworks for BSL gestures.
	Process skeletal motion data to drive simulation pipelines.
	Conduct radar experiments to calibrate and benchmark simulation outputs.
	Write academic papers, contribute to open-source dataset releases, and present your work at international conferences.


About you

You will bring your passion for advancing radar sensing technology into a new application domain. You will have:


	A PhD* or equivalent qualification / experience in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Signal Processing, or a closely related field.
	Proven experience in radar systems, radar signal processing, and simulation.
	Strong programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or C++).
	Excellent problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset.


Experience with micro-Doppler or range-Doppler radar analysis, or familiarity with animation/motion capture data processing, would be advantageous.

The research group “Atmospheric Transport Processes,” led by Prof. Andreas Stohl, is part of the?Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. The group develops the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART and studies all aspects of transport in the atmosphere, ranging from greenhouse gases to pollutants, water vapour and heat, and uses inverse modelling techniques to determine sources of greenhouse gases, air pollutants and radionuclides.

Your personal sphere of play:

We seek a highly motivated candidate to co-lead the further development of the transport model FLEXPART and its applications. FLEXPART is a community model, and our group is committed to its further development and making it more user-friendly. We also maintain and develop software to process meteorological input data to the model, as well as software for the analysis of model output. One example is the software FLEXINVERT, which is used for inverse modelling applications, e.g., to determine the sources of greenhouse gases. We are also seeking to establish new scientific application fields for FLEXPART, and the candidate will be free to choose future research directions of his/her own choice.

The successful candidate will be a creative scientist who enjoys both writing and documenting model source code, as well as seeking novel model applications. As a result of this work, peer-reviewed publications documenting the model and describing its applications are expected. The successful candidate will also support master students, doctoral students and Postdocs in the group, and will – to a limited extent – provide support to external users of FLEXPART.

The responsibility for the code development will be shared with another senior scientist, Marina Dütsch, and the development shall integrate the work of the whole group

The position will initially be limited to three years duration, after which it can become permanent by mutual agreement.

Your tasks will be:

Active participation in research, teaching, and administration, which means you will in particular:


	Co-lead the further development of the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART;
	Conduct research by applying the model in different fields;
	Publish your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals;
	Teach within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement;
	Strengthen the collaborative culture of our team and the department.


You will require:


	Completed doctorate / PhD in the atmospheric sciences (e.g., meteorology, climatology), physics, computational sciences, or a related field;
	Excellent programming skills, preferably in Fortran and Python;
	A good team spirit and willingness to collaborate;
	Strong English communication skills.


These skills would be an advantage:


	Experience with Lagrangian transport models;

We are looking for a Senior Research Assistant/ Research Fellow with a background in Health Services Research, with experience in advanced quantitative methodologies. Some experience in qualitative methods is also desired. In our study we are investigating whether it is possible to predict how many nurses are needed on hospital wards from routinely collected data. You will have an interest in healthcare workforce research, with an enthusiasm for researching nurse staffing decisions that maintain quality and safety of patient care. ?Your work will involve a variety of tasks including both individual and team working. The project offers opportunities to apply skills in qualitative data analysis of survey data, complex regression modelling and predictive data analytics. ??

The role?

You will join an interdisciplinary research group whose work has contributed to health workforce policy and guidance in the UK and worldwide. You will work on a 2.5-year study funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research. This collaborative study involves co-Investigators from the 51国产视频 of Southampton, two NHS hospital Trusts, Imperial College London and NHS England.?

Working closely with co-Investigators, you will contribute to analysis tasks across the project. The post is funded until October 2027 with a fixed-term contract initially, but we will work with you to identify opportunities for ongoing funding.
