The Ukrainian port city of Odesa was established in 1794 by the Russian empress Catherine the Great, as a naval fortress and trading post on the Black Sea. In the 19th century, it became a major transport hub for exports to Western Europe.
So it is perhaps unsurprising that, in 1930, it was decided that Odesa should be the location for a university to educate future maritime-industry professionals. Today, Odesa National Maritime 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ still aims to educate students in the areas of maritime transportation, port operations and marine engineering.
The university has five specialist institutes and faculties: the educational and scientific institute of information technologies and innovative entrepreneurship; the educational and scientific marine-engineering and technical institute; the maritime institute of humanities; the merchant-marine institute; and the institute of marine business.
ONMU holds conferences and events on topics related to its specialist areas of research. It also runs exchange programmes and joint-degree courses with its international partner institutions.
