Times Higher Education (THE) has announced the results of its World 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ Rankings by Subject 2022 for Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Psychology, and Clinical & Health, providing a list of the best institutions in the world to study these disciplines. 1,523 universities from 98 countries and regions are ranked in at least one of the four subject tables.

Physical Sciences

The US is the best place in the world to study Physical Sciences, taking seven positions in the top 10 and 35 in the top 100 from a table of 1,227 ranked institutions. It also claims all of the positions in the top six, as the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of California, Berkeley (1^st) replaces California Institute of Technology (=2^nd) at the top of the table. The universities in the world¡¯s top 10 remain unchanged as UK¡¯s 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Cambridge (7^th) and 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Oxford (8^th) hold onto their places for a second consecutive year and ³§·É¾±³Ù³ú±ð°ù±ô²¹²Ô»å¡¯²õ ETH Zurich (9^th) continues to disrupt the Anglo-American domination of the top 10, with a sixth consecutive appearance in the band.

Elsewhere in Physical Sciences, Mainland China sees Peking 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ (15^th) and Tsinghua 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ (18^th) both appear in the top 20 for a fourth consecutive year, and a record number of its universities rank in the top 100 (seven) as Shanghai Jiao Tong 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ (81^st) and Zhejiang 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ (=100^th) move into the band. Both of ³§¾±²Ô²µ²¹±è´Ç°ù±ð¡¯²õ universities move up the rankings as National 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Singapore (16^th) achieves its best position since 2018 and Nanyang Technological 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, Singapore moves up five places to =35^th. France¡¯s Institut Polytechnique de Paris debuts in 22^nd place (following the merger of of Ecole Polytechnique and other schools) while Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Italy, Russia, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Denmark and Belgium also claim at least one position in the world¡¯s top 100.

Life Sciences

The US and UK are home to all of the world¡¯s top 10 universities for Life Sciences from a table of 972 institutions, as Harvard 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ claims top spot for a second consecutive year. The UK¡¯s 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Cambridge (2^nd) and 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Oxford (=3^rd) retain their positions in the top three while American universities claim the remainder of the top 10 positions with Princeton 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ the biggest climber, moving up five places to 5^th. ?The US is home to a record 14 of the world¡¯s top 20 for Life Sciences and also claims an impressive 36 of the world¡¯s top 100 institutions, followed by the UK with 13, Germany 10 and Australia seven.

Mainland China sees all five of its top 100 universities improve as Tsinghua 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ climbs to 13^th, and Peking 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ (=19^th) moves into the top 20. ?³§·É¾±³Ù³ú±ð°ù±ô²¹²Ô»å¡¯²õ ETH Zurich (14^th), and ±·±ð³Ù³ó±ð°ù±ô²¹²Ô»å²õ¡¯ Wageningen 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ & Research (=19^th), also claim top 20 positions.

Four of the 107 debut institutions in Life Sciences claim top 100 positions with the US¡¯ 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Washington (18^th), France¡¯s recently merged Universit¨¦ Paris-Saclay (53^rd), ¹ó°ù²¹²Ô³¦±ð¡¯²õ Institut Polytechnique de Paris (84^th), and ´¡³Ü²õ³Ù°ù²¹±ô¾±²¹¡¯²õ UNSW Sydney (88^th) all appearing in the band. The top 100 also sees at least one university ranked from Singapore, Canada, Sweden, Japan, Hong Kong, Belgium, South Korea, Republic of Ireland, Austria and Denmark.

Psychology

The UK and US lay claim to the top ten universities in the world for Psychology as 567 institutions appear in the table, with the UK¡¯s 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Cambridge (1^st) claiming top spot on its first appearance for the subject. It is joined in the top 10 by fellow British institution UCL (6^th) and eight American universities as Harvard 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ moves up two positions to 4^th. In total the US is home to 43 of the world¡¯s top 100 universities for Psychology, while the UK claims 13 top 100 spots, and the Netherlands eight.

Outside the top 10, °ä²¹²Ô²¹»å²¹¡¯²õ 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Toronto (19^th) moves back into the top 20, while ³Ò±ð°ù³¾²¹²Ô²â¡¯²õ LMU Munich (27^th) and ´¡³Ü²õ³Ù°ù²¹±ô¾±²¹¡¯²õ UNSW Sydney (29^th) rank in the top 30 for the first time. Japan¡¯s Kyoto 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ (99^th) gives the country two top 100 universities in Psychology for the first time in three years (with The 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Tokyo, =70^th) and New Zealand sees 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Auckland (=73^rd), 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Otago (=93^rd) and Victoria 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Wellington (100^th) all move into the top 100. In total 18 countries and regions appear in the top 100 as Austria, Belgium, Mainland China, Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel, Republic of Ireland, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland also see at least one university rank in the elite band.

Clinical & Health

Four countries and regions are home to a top 10 university for Clinical and Health studies, as the UK and US claim four places each, with the ±«°­¡¯²õ 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Oxford retaining top spot for the 11^th consecutive year and Harvard 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ in the US holding onto second place. Canada¡¯s 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Toronto climbs one place to fifth while Mainland China sees Tsinghua 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ (7^th) leap up 25 places to appear in the top 10 for the first time. Hong Kong is also represented in the top 20 for the first time, as 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Hong Kong (20^th) rises eight places. In total 925 institutions appear in the table with the US claiming 28 top 100 places, the UK 15, Canada and Australia seven, and Mainland China, Germany and the Netherlands six.

±õ²Ô»å¾±²¹¡¯²õ JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (=93^rd) is the only institution to debut in the top 100 for Clinical & Health, from 91 universities that qualify for the first time, while a total of nine universities move into the top 100 from Mainland China (2), the UK (2), Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland (1 each). In total 22 countries and regions appear in the top 100 as Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, France, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea and Taiwan also claim at least one position in the elite band.
