More than a quarter of Americans aged over 25 have degrees, compared with 21.3 per cent a decade ago, and only 4.6 per cent in 1940, according to figures released by the United States Census Bureau. The figures show considerable regional variations, ranging from the District of Columbia, which has 41 per cent of college graduates, to Arkansas, which has only 17.3 per cent.
