Manchester honours Bannister with degree
Sir Roger Bannister, runner of the first sub-four-minute mile, was today presented with a combined honorary degree from the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Manchester, the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Salford and Manchester Metropolitan 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ. The ceremony was timed to coincide with the city's hosting of the Commonwealth Games.

Pests outpacing pesticide development
Insects are developing resistance to pesticides faster than new ones can be developed, scientists from Rothamsted Research and the John Innes Centre in Norwich warned today. Ian Crute, director of Rothamsted, said: "The bugs are gaining on us - and our defences are increasingly fragile." A report produced from a two-day workshop said that some estimates suggest more than 40 per cent of potential crop yield is lost to pests.

Male hospital doctors' needs undervalued
Male hospital doctors feel heavy workloads and long working hours are hitting both their family and professional lives, according to Ulster 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ research. More than 80 per cent believe their employers place little importance on the need for doctors to balance work and domestic life.
