Researchers believe they have opened the door to the new hydrogen economy by finding an energy-efficient way to make the element out of used vegetable oil. Scientists at the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Leeds believe their method solves the problem of manufacturing hydrogen without consuming vast amounts of energy because it self-generates some of the heat needed to extract the substance. An added ingredient also traps the carbon dioxide produced, making the process carbon-neutral. The researchers are now trialling the process on a larger scale.
