One-sixth of elderly dementia patients are prescribed unnecessary and potentially harmful anti-psychotic drugs. Researchers at the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Dundee found that those treated for dementia were more likely to be prescribed drugs to manage behavioural and psychological disturbances than other elderly patients. But despite their frequent use, the researchers conclude, the drugs have little benefit and can cause strokes and increase mortality rates.
