Making biofuel from material such as wood or straw may be easier following the discovery of a key plant enzyme by scientists. 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Cambridge researchers identified and studied the genes for two enzymes that toughen plant material and make it difficult to extract sugars for bioethanol and other products. A spokesman for the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, which funded the project, said the findings could increase the economic viability of extracting biofuels from a variety of sources.
