Ulster 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ has offered to make its vice-chancellor, Gerry McKenna, its "president", giving him the role of travelling ambassador for the university, after an investigation into complaints about his "conduct and capability. Although the report by Sir Michael Buckley is understood to suggest that there are sufficient grounds for a full tribunal to hear the allegations, the university's governing council is understood to have decided against this option at a meeting last week.

Senior sources said the vice-chancellor had until May to accept the offer of a presidential role. This would leave him on full pay of about ?200,000 for a year and allow him to travel the world marketing the university.
