Professor Marshall has been acting vice-chancellor since former incumbent Martin Hall retired with immediate effect in December.

She joined Salford as deputy vice-chancellor in July 2013, following a three-year stint in a similar capacity at the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of South Wales. Previously, she held senior positions at the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Central Lancashire and the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Cumbria.

Beverley Hughes, Salford¡¯s chair of council, said: ¡°Following a rigorous selection process, which included representation from academic and administrative staff and students, validated by independent advisers including a current vice-chancellor, Helen proved herself to be the outstanding candidate. It is a credit to the university that it has the talent to draw internally for this important position.¡±

Professor Marshall said she had been struck by ¡°the enormous potential that exists to shape this university into an institution that nurtures outstanding talent and opportunity for its graduates¡±.

¡°Whilst we have a lot of work to do, I am relishing the opportunity to work with colleagues to establish Salford as an outstanding university,¡± she added.
