People's poet: Jack Mapanje, one of Africa's most important living poets, ran a writer's workshop this week at Stirling 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ's summer school, focusing on the theme of the G8 summit and Africa. Dr Mapanje, former head of the English department at Malawi 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, was imprisoned without trial by the Malawian Government in 1987. Despite an international campaign by writers and human rights activists, he was held for more than three years and fled his homeland on his release. He is now senior lecturer in creative writing in Newcastle 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ's School of English
