Twelve US students have won scholarships to study in Ireland as a tribute to George Mitchell, the American senator who helped shape the Northern Ireland peace process.

The Mitchell scholarships for high-fliers are the initiative of the US-Ireland Alliance, a Washington-based, non-profit organisation, and are part-supported by Northern Ireland's Department of Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment.

The 12 students are spread throughout Ireland's universities, including two at Queen's 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, Belfast, and one at Ulster 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ.
