Floud wins CVCP leadership
Roderick Floud, vice-chancellor of London Guildhall 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, has won the contest to become the next president of the newly relaunched Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals. Professor Floud beat Essex 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ vice-chancellor Ivor Crewe by one vote. He will succeed Sir Howard Newby in August and will hold the post for two years.

Hull to make 50 redundancies
Hull 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ¡¯s senate was today debating whether to impose more than 50 compulsory redundancies. Under restructuring proposals, the department of European languages and cultures is to be disbanded and there will be no more intakes to all single honours languages and professional engineering programmes.

Scots steer clear of Warwick
No Scottish students enrolled at the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Warwick this year, following the abolition of up-front tuition fees in Scotland. Fewer part-time and mature students also enrolled but more independently educated students did. Student union president Caitlin McKenzie said Scottish students now based their choice of university on cost.


A night for stargazing
Venus and the Moon will provide a beautiful display tonight. The evening star will shine close to a thin crescent Moon so that both dominate the southwestern sky as twilight deepens. The best views will come in late twilight when most of the light has gone but the Moon and Venus have not started setting.
