York 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ was still operating today despite the city's worst flooding for more than 400 years, but staff and students were being asked to forgo baths or showers on campus and to restrict loo flushing. Lab experiments were being cancelled as the area's flooded waste treatment centres were inoperable.

Kemp quits as Glasgow rector

Television star Ross Kemp, the student-elected rector of Glasgow 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, has resigned after a no-confidence vote from the Students¡¯ Representative Council. Mr Kemp said: ¡°Work pressures over the past year have overtaken me and made it impossible for me to fulfil my obligations in the way I should have liked.¡±

VandeLinde to lead Warwick

David VandeLinde, vice-chancellor of Bath 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, will succeed Sir Brian Follett as vice-chancellor of the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Warwick from next August. He said: "Warwick is now well established within the UK¡¯s "Ivy League", and I look forward to the opportunity and challenge to lead Warwick in becoming recognised as a world-class research university."

Minister predicts 'creative' jobs boost

About 50,000 jobs will be created in ¡°creative industries¡± in the next three years, film and broadcasting minister Janet Anderson predicted today. At the London College of Fashion¡¯s Millennium Conference, she said: ¡°These industries are a vibrant, exciting, productive part of the economy ¡ª they make a difference.¡±
