The US Government has given ?15 million to universities hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The maximum award for any institution was ?3 million, and 22 higher education institutions were funded. Many will use the money to renovate buildings, offset lost income because of drops in enrolment and to fund grants or staff.

The institutions awarded the money include Lamar 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, Dillard 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, Louisiana State 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ Health Sciences Center, Southern 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ at New Orleans, Tulane 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of New Orleans, Xavier 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Southern Mississippi and William Carey 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ.
