Encyclopaedia of Shakespeare¡¯s Language

¡°The project investigates Shakespeare¡¯s language, but not simply how it is used to create meanings within Shakespeare,¡± said Jonathan Culpeper, professor of English language and linguistics at Lancaster 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ. ¡°It will compare his language with that of a 321 million-word corpus comprising the works of his contemporaries.¡± Professor Culpeper told Times Higher Education that the UK was a ¡°world leader in corpus-based methods¡± ¨C using computers to identify language patterns in vast collections of electronic texts. The UK has ¡°generated dictionaries, grammars and more¡±, he said, but this has ¡°never been done for Shakespeare¡±. The researchers hope to discover ¡°what is unique about Shakespeare¡¯s language and what it would have meant to his contemporaries¡± ¨C for example, attitudes towards ¡°love¡± or ¡°death¡±, what it means to be ¡°Welsh¡± or a ¡°harlot¡±, or even the significance of eating ¡°fish¡± instead of ¡°beef¡±.
