(Photograph) - Cambridge 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ launched a poster campaign this week (above) designed to "break down the stereotypes" and encourage more people from state schools and ethnic minorities to apply.

The campaign, "Put yourself in the picture", will go to 4,000 schools and sixth-forms. The launch comes as Cambridge celebrates 50 years since the first women were admitted to degree programmes. The student union will mark the event with an exhibition at Newnham College of photos taken 100 years ago, when thousands of male senior staff and students protested against admitting women (right).

Women's officer Penny Pereira said: "We hope to ensure that gender inequalities that remain a century after the battle for equal membership first began are not forgotten but are tackled in a productive and open way."
