In The THES last week, we incorrectly calculated the pay rise for Sir Kenneth Calman, vice-chancellor of the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Durham. It was actually 3 per cent, taking his pay to ?142,000. We apologise for the error.

The emoluments of Dai John, director of Luton 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, included the university's contribution to his national insurance and pension. Excluding this figure, Dr John received a 11.7 per cent pay rise, which took his salary to ?110,000. Eight people at Luton earned more than ?50,000.

The emoluments of Ian Johnston, principal of Glasgow Caledonian 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, included the university's contribution to his pension. The university has calculated a 6.9 per cent pay rise, taking his pay to ?112,000.

The emoluments of Richard Shaw, principal of the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Paisley, also included the employer's pension contribution. Excluding this figure, Professor Shaw received a 4.2 per cent pay rise, which took his salary to ?100,000.
