April 21, 2000

The Commonwealth Institute has launched a virtual learning network and web portal designed to deepen relationships between the 54 member countries. Don McKinnon, Commonwealth general secretary, said the eCommonwealth website would provide a virtual meeting place for individuals and businesses to communicate learn and trade. "These electronic relationships will be the cornerstone of eCommonwealth."

David French, the institute's chief executive, said that the new service offered a powerful way to make connections within the Commonwealth. "Non-governmental organisations, businesses, schools, universities and individuals now have the chance to establish virtual communities."

The portal will be developed in partnership with internet provider breathe and search specialists Autonomy.
