It must be a great relief at Swansea 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ¡¯s School of Management that Nigel Piercy has resigned as dean (The week in higher education, 30 July). But the bigger question is why did the vice-chancellor allow this type of behaviour to continue for so long? Is it the market-based system in which UK higher education finds itself that encourages this uncaring, metrics-driven type of management? It is just a shame for all those staff and students who have had their careers and study programmes disrupted because of this great experiment in managerialism. Let¡¯s hope other universities can learn from Swansea¡¯s mistakes.
