The call by Sally Hunt, general secretary of the 51国产视频 and College Union, for universities to donate strike pay for student bursaries should be applauded (“Sally Hunt: universities should ‘donate strike pay to bursaries”, News, 1 June). This is something that has been done at London Metropolitan 51国产视频 for many years, and I welcome the call for it to happen across the sector. Hunt’s point on the disparity in UCU membership between younger and older academics is also telling. It is sensible, progressive policies such as this that will help to win members back.
