Nottingham Trent 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ is among 11 institutions sharing Ecu 1.4 million (Pounds 1.12 million) to build a pan-European teacher training system using the World Wide Web.

Teacher trainers and students at each university will write and exchange multimedia resources on the Internet for the project, Reseau d'Enseignment Multimedia (REM).

The aim is not to build "teacher replacement" multimedia materials but rather the building blocks to be used by teachers and students on their courses.

NTU's faculty of education will receive Pounds 122,500 and most is earmarked for new posts, a key stipulation of the bid for European Commission funding.

The project aims to give at least 1,000 students access during the first stages of the system. Alan Browne, REM project co-ordinator at NTU said: "We value the importance human contact plays in the learning process.

"The project is embedded in a rich communications framework using the Web, video conferencing and computer supported collaborative work.
