A. Campbell, professor of biomedical ethics at Otago Medical School and director of the bioethics research centre, has been appointed to the chair in ethics in medicine; R. Fowler, chairman of the department of classical studies at the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Waterloo, Canada, has been appointed to the Henry Overton Wills chair of Greek.

Graham, philosophy; A. Halestrap, biochemistry; R. Harrison, archaeology; A. Houston, biological sciences; R. Hutton, historical studies; P. Longley, geography, R. Lowe, historical studies; R. Parkes, geology; D. Smith, mechanical engineering; R. Bullock, senior research fellow, was also promoted to professor in policy studies and director of Dartington research unit.
