Liverpool is not the UK's leading university in complexity research ("World will not bow to our control", THES , January 16) and is, in some respects, the new kid on the block.

In 2001, the Open 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ established its Complexity Science Research Centre following an international conference titled "Working with New Understandings of Nature, Chaos Theory, Complexity Science and Evolution". Along with Cranfield 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ, we also played a major role in setting up the UK Complexity Society, which is open to academics and non-academics alike.
