Evidence that a Cambridge college was built on the site of a sprawling Roman settlement has been unearthed by sixth-form students. The discovery was made during an excavation of gardens at Newnham College. A group of 20 sixth-form girls, supervised by two of the university's archaeologists, travelled from across the country to take part in the dig and found numerous pieces of Roman pottery - indicating a larger settlement on the site than was previously thought.
