It seems that Bill Rammell (Letters, August 3) is a little too preoccupied with UK universities competing on an international stage to notice the concerns some institutions have on a national level.

Your article "Cap off: it is time to reconsider profile" (August 3) uncovered the concerns learning institutes will experience if the cap is removed.

Why does Edge Hill 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ feel the need to spend ?2 million on a marketing campaign to attract potential students when it should be investing in educational facilities for the ones it already has?

With the higher education policies the Government has introduced over the past few years, surely when Rammell talks of a "competitive... world-class education system" he means "a disowned sector, struggling to implement rules of the marketplace"?
