ALASDAIR Smith, 49, is the new vice-chancellor of the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Sussex. Professor Smith has been professor of economics at Sussex since 1981, after working at the London School of Economics, and is the university's senior pro-vice-chancellor and acting vice-chancellor. He succeeds Gordon Conway, who became president of the Rockefeller Foundation in New York in March.
