More than a third of student midwives are being forced to work up to 20 hours a week to pay their way through a course, according to the Royal College of Midwives. The RCM student hardship survey, published to coincide with the college's annual conference this week, also found that more than a third live in the expensive regions of London and the Southeast and almost half are aged over 30.
