The Goldman Sachs Foundation and the Sutton Trust have launched a ?1 million Academic Enrichment Programme to encourage gifted students from poor areas into higher education. From September, the scheme aims to attract 900 state school pupils from non-professional backgrounds to the universities of Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham. The cities were chosen because of their populations' low uptake of higher education.
