Making lower entry offers to students at poorly performing schools may backfire, says a report from the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The achievements of students from poorly performing schools at university were found to be inconsistent. They depended on students' A-level points at entry, their gender, the subject and the measure of achievement used in higher education. However, the report supported earlier findings that students from state schools tended to do better than those from independent schools.
