The government is investing ?23 million to help young researchers move from short-term contracts to a permanent academic job. Under the Department of Trade and Industry's academic fellowship scheme, up to 200 five-year fellowships will be created every year until 2006, each to the value of ?125,000. PhD students will be able to apply for funding in areas covered by the research councils and the Arts and Humanities Research Board.
