Leaders of the world's industrial nations have signed a charter outlining their common goals on lifelong learning. G8 members signed the charter at their recent summit in Germany. It says that meeting social and economic goals will require a renewed commitment to investment in lifelong learning by governments, employers and individuals. Among the essential elements of a strategy for lifelong learning are listed vocational training geared to the labour market and new technology and higher education systems offering opportunities to everyone capable of benefiting from degree-level work and with the necessary financial support to ensure access. Tony Blair said that education and lifelong learning are the passports to success in today's global economy.
