The Further Education Funding Council's figures for 1996-97 reveal that:

* enrolments to council-funded further education courses increased by 16 per cent to 3.1 million

* part-time numbers were up 22 per cent

* 80 per cent of students were adults,taking for 3.7 million exam courses
