I am not leaving the 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology because I object to the merger with Manchester 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ or the way it has been handled ("Cooper quits Umist over merger", THES, September 26). On the contrary, I support the merger and I wish the new university every success. My decision to leave is personal.

The change allowed me an opportunity, after 29 years at my beloved Umist, to take on new challenges at Lancaster 51¹ú²úÊÓƵ.
