I noted with great interest the appreciation of the importance of the work of the French sociologist Jean Baudrillard in The Times Higher (Opinion, March 16).

However, as someone who firmly believes in Baudrillard's dictum that reality is very much a contingent matter, I am far from convinced that Baudrillard is actually dead and, therefore, a suitable subject for an appreciation.

Just because something appears in the media does not mean that it must be true.
