The British Academy has announced the election of 65 new fellows, pushing the total past 1,000 for the first time.

The new cohort, which takes the total number of fellows to 1,001, includes 42 highly distinguished UK academics ranging across the social sciences and humanities and 20 corresponding fellows from overseas.

There are also three new honorary fellows: former chief executive of the British Library, Dame Lynne Brindley, now master of Pembroke College, Oxford; Dame Carol Ann Duffy, poet laureate; and Sir John Eliot Gardiner, founder and artistic director of the Monteverdi Choir, the English Baroque Soloists and the Orchestre R¨¦volutionnaire et Romantique.
