We are seeking an excellent academic to join our staff on a specified purpose contract basis as an Assistant Lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Studies. The person appointed will have a proven record of teaching, research and publication, appropriate to career stage.?

They will be expected to make a strong contribution to the teaching programme in Spanish and Latin American Studies and undertake teaching duties on the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as contributing to the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate theses and research projects.

A post-doctoral Research Associate is sought to work with Dr David Comerford on the Leverhulme Trust funded project: Accounting for (the loss of) Globalisation in the Economics of Climate Change.

This project explores the interaction between climate change and globalisation. A globalised economy benefits from the gains from trade, but we know from history that bad economic times are usually associated with retreats from globalisation. An efficient, globalised, economy may be able to make the investments needed to mitigate climate change, but as the climate emergency unfolds, the damage to the economy could undermine globalisation. By building a novel climate-economy model, incorporating the economics of international trade, we will provide invaluable insights for the academic community and policymakers, guiding global efforts towards more effective and sustainable economic and environmental strategies.
Climate change is a global problem that requires globally coordinated policy to solve. Moreover, globalisation not only makes globally coordinated policy easier, but the associated gains provide resources with which climate change can be tackled. However, global economic integration tends to go along with economic progress, and during periods of economic stress we have seen globalisation retreat or reverse. The climate emergency, by creating adverse economic conditions, may make solving the climate problem even harder as countries respond to stresses by retreating into protectionism and autarky, whilst blaming the global order. Indeed, with Brexit, the US-China Trade War, and the rise of nationalistic authoritarian political movements across the world, along with the economic malaise of the cost of living crisis, we may be seeing early signs of this.

The interaction of climate change and globalisation is not well studied. This project fills this research gap by combining elements of international economics and climate change economics, to create an innovative augmented climate-economy model. This model is an academic contribution, and its use in creating simulations and answering policy relevant questions will also be academic outputs, that contribute to the academic understanding of what may become a crucial policy relevant issue.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of and experience in the macroeconomic modelling of climate change, and/or new trade theory modelling. The project will combine these two strands of the economics literature, to produce research that can speak to a highly relevant and topical area of applied economics.

Department of Economics

As a Research Associate, under the general guidance of a research leader, you will develop research objectives and proposals, play a lead role in relation to a specific project/s or part of a broader project, conduct individual and/or collaborative research, contribute to the development of new research methods, identify sources of funding, and contribute to the securing of funds for research, including drafting grant proposals and planning for future proposals. You will write up research work for publication, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate the results via peer reviewed journal publications and presentation at conferences. You will join external networks to share information and ideas, inform the development of research objectives and to identify potential sources of funding. You will collaborate with colleagues to ensure that research advances inform departmental teaching effort and you will collaborate with colleagues on the development of knowledge exchange activities by, for example, participating in initiatives which establish research links with industry and influence public policy and the professions. You will supervise student projects, provide advice to students and contribute to teaching as required by, for example, running tutorials and supervising practical work.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree.

The selected candidate will work on innovative AI methodologies in areas such as renewable energy integration (online forecasting tools and renewable energy management systems), smart transmission and distribution networks, AI-driven smart grid technologies, and demand response systems. The role involves conducting research, developing standalone and prototype AI solutions, and publishing in top-tier conferences and journals.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, with a strong publication record in AI-driven energy solutions. Proficiency in machine learning frameworks (MATLAB), as well as experience in statistical learning, and embedded systems, is required. Familiarity with cost-effective COTS-based environmental monitoring solutions is a plus. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in research-focused teams and contribute to innovative AI-driven solutions.

The project focuses on the development of computational “digital twin” models and novel control strategies for sustainable MRI in low- and middle-income settings.
